Transformative Power of Faith and Service:
Lunic is a licensed minister. Faith has played a role in her life even in addiction. In her addiction, she would pray that God would take the taste of the drug out of her mouth. In recovery, her faith was her Rock. “If God qualifies me, man can’t not stop what God has for me,” she exclaimed. Her belief in a higher purpose provides her with strength and motivation. She also highlights the value of giving back, stating, “I didn’t go through all of this darkness and all of these drugs... It was literally to give somebody else hope.” This sense of purpose through service not only helps her find fulfillment but also creates a ripple effect of support and empowerment within her community. She encourages others to “hug wholeheartedly” and seek connections, reinforcing that acts of kindness can transform lives.
A physical manifestation of her faith is her commitment to glorifying God through her business, God is Great Apparel. She sells clothing emblazoned with the phrases “God is Great” and “And I’m Living Proof,” sharing her story and faith to inspire others who might be facing tough times.
The Importance of Support Systems:
A strong support network is vital for overcoming addiction and fostering recovery. Lunic reflects on her own experience, noting how the people around her shifted during her darkest days. “My behavior, my language, how I speak... the people I was around was different,” she shared. It’s so easy for addiction to isolate us from our supportive communities. Support from Narcotics Anonymous, having a sponsor and attending therapy sessions were key to her healing, saying, “I think it’s important that we visit the idea of going to therapy and therapy is not for crazy people... It’s important to give yourself grace.” Seeking help and connecting with others is essential in navigating the recovery journey.
Embracing Self-Compassion and Forgiveness:
“It’s important to give yourself grace.” This is a recurring mantra in the conversation between Ray and Lunic. In the face of past mistakes, it’s important to love yourself not beat yourself down.“You are not your mistake. You are not your parents’ mistake,” she says.
And coupled with grace is forgiveness. She says she learned the power of forgiveness when she finally confessed to her boyfriend at the time in a letter the reason she was in rehab. He taped the house key to the return letter and simply wrote “I’m here come home whenever you’re ready.” She says that’s when she learned the power of forgiveness – what it really means to forgive. She also warns,“You have to want to be okay and you have to want to do the work.”
